NZ Motorcycle Licence Overview

Learner Licence

View Pathway
There are two steps to getting a motorcycle licence. 1. Pass your Basic Handling Skills practical riding test (with Roadsafe), then 2. Pass your Motorcycle Road Code theory test (at a driver licence agency like the AA). You must be age 16 to apply for your motorcycle learner licence.
Options: Roadsafe can provide a Learn to Ride course if you have little or no previous riding experience on a motorcycle using the clutch and changing gears. Basic Handling Skills is for riders who are confident and competent riding a motorcycle, providing training to learn and practice the BHS test, and includes the test. If you are an experienced rider who has already practised the BHS test, Roadsafe can provide the BHS Test Only.

Restricted Licence

View Pathway
For riders with a learner motorcycle licence and currently riding on the road, Roadsafe can provide the CBTA Restricted licence assessment. Passing this enables you to apply for your restricted motorcycle licence (at a driver licence agency like the AA) with no minimum wait time required. You must be age 16.5 to apply for your motorcycle restricted licence.
Options: If you are new to riding and want more confidence on the road in urban areas, Roadsafe can provide our Urban Commuter course. If you are feeling confident riding on the road at 100km/hr, Roadafe can provide our Ride Forever Bronze course to continue to improve your riding skills, and help you learn the test criteria for your CBTA Restricted assessment. When you have completed your Bronze course, Roadsafe have 1 Hour Training sessions and a Pre Test Check Ride available prior to you attempting your CBTA Restricted assessment.

Full Licence

View Pathway
For riders with a restricted motorcycle licence (held for a minimum of 9 months), and currently riding on the road, Roadsafe can provide the CBTA Full licence assessment. Passing this enables you to apply for your full motorcycle licence (at a driver licence agency like the AA) when you have held your restricted licence for a minimum of 12 months.
Options: Roadafe can provide our Ride Forever Silver course to continue to improve your riding skills, and help you learn the test criteria for your CBTA Full assessment. Many riders find it helpful to attend a second Bronze course to consolidate their learning. When you have completed your second Bronze and/or Silver course, Roadsafe have 1 Hour Training sessions and a Pre Test Check Ride available prior to you attempting your CBTA Restricted assessment.
